From The Director: As of this writing, those of us in Central and Northern Wisconsin are patiently waiting for the snow to melt and Mother Nature to wash the roads clear of the remaining salt residue and sand. While we wait, we can reflect that May is Motorcycle Awareness month. With the prolonged snow falls that occurred in April it gives us some time to inspect our bikes and fix any problems that we may have pushed aside. Take the time to test your battery, fluids, and all your routine inspections on your bike. This will allow you to have the confidence in your own bike and focus on the vehicles that are not accustomed to you being on the road again.
You may be wondering why I didn’t write a news article last month. During the winter months this may occur due to things really slowing down and our motorcycles being in storage for the winter months. Also, and this isn’t an excuse, I am also writing articles to publish in various newspapers to try to spur some interest in our Chapter. I also spent time trying to put together a calendar of events for our chapter to publish on our website. Please be patient, eventually everything will fall into place and we will all be riding and enjoying the summer and fall seasons.
There are going to be a lot of fun things to do this summer, relating to motorcycling. Coming quickly is District Dust Off to be held at Glacier Valley Campground in Cambria, WI. For those of you that don’t know where Cambria is, it’s 15 miles east of Portage, just off Highway 33. This is a great time to knock the dust off your bike and fine tune your riding skills. You will also get to be reacquainted with your GWRRA friends from other Chapters. I know there is a dinner at 6:00 PM on Friday night, and if you bring your Tour Sheet along, you will have a chance at (2) $50 drawings! You can attend one day or the whole weekend.
In July the District will be holding a District wide Ride-In. All members are welcome to attend this event. The location is yet to be determined, so please keep checking the District website for more information. It will be a picnic type style and maybe a few games to challenge your fellow Chapter members.
We will be leading a ride to the UP of Michigan on August 9-12. This ride is open to anyone that wishes to attend. This is going to be a fun time. We are not only going to have members from Wisconsin, but we teamed up with the Minnesota District also. As of this writing we have 57 people going, 31 from Wisconsin, 22 from Minnesota, 2 from Illinois, and 2 from Nebraska. Please do not let the numbers deter you from attending this ride. This trip is mainly geared for riding. When we arrive, after we settle in, there will be an evening ride around the lake. During our stay you will be able to choose from a number of guided rides that I have set up or you will be able to do a self-guided ride. We are also renting a couple of pontoons one afternoon and taking a short ride out on Lake Gogebic. After we get off the bikes we will have plenty of games to challenge your fellow members or you may just wish to relax around a community campfire. So please come join us on this First Annual Motorcycling Adventure. For more information, please give me a call or send me an email.
If you are interested in going to Wing Ding, as District Ride Coordinator I will be setting up and leading a ride to Wing Ding in Knoxville, Tennessee. Wing Ding is held August 28 thru September 1 and I will have more details on that at a later date.
Then on September 14-15 there is the Wisconsin District Rally. We will have guided and self-guided rides for you to go on. There are plenty of things to do, but most importantly this rally brings you together with other Chapter members throughout the State that have the same interest as you do, and that is riding a motorcycle. GWRRA is all about forming friendships and there isn’t any better way than by attending this rally and forming those bonds.
As you can see there are events that you can join in the fun with other Chapter members throughout the State. There will be plenty of things for you to do as a Chapter this year also. I am reintroducing the Wednesday rides. They will be leaving the Kwik Trip gas station on 8th Street South, by Wal Mart, in Wisconsin Rapids. Please pay attention to the calendar for these rides because there may be a couple we won’t be able to attend. Thru September we will be holding a social in Waupaca at the Rose Garden Restaurant at 5:30 on the fourth Tuesday of the month (except August will be the third Tuesday). After we are finished eating, weather permitting, we will go on a short ride. Our Rapids social will be held the second Tuesday of each month at the Olympic II Restaurant on 8th Street in Wisconsin Rapids at 5:30.
On August 18 the chapter will have a Cabin Cookout/Potluck at noon at Les and Judeen’s cabin. On September 8 at 1 PM there will be a Party in the Woods Potluck sponsored by Al and Barb Shruck (this date may change). September 29-30 will be our fall color ride, and October 27 at noon will be the Garbage Can Cookout.
The District is also holding an ARC (Advanced Rider Course on two wheels) on Saturday, June 23, and a TRC (Trike Rider Course) on Sunday, June 24. Both of these events will be held at the South Wood County Recreation Center on 16th Street in Wisconsin Rapids. The cost is $40 per bike, which includes classroom and on-bike maneuvers. The co-rider is also encouraged to attend this course. What a great opportunity to take these classes right in our own back yard! Please contact John Sweeney, Jr. at firstname.lastname@example.org or phone 715-424-2897.
As you can see there will be a variety of things for you to do as a Chapter this year. GWRRA is stressing more emphasis on riding and we hope this will peak your interest. People keep saying GWRRA, the District, and Chapters keep doing the same things and it’s getting boring. Well, here’s your chance. We are changing things up and doing things a little differently. Now is your chance to join in on the fun and experience riding with your fellow members. Isn’t that why we bought our motorcycles, to ride? Didn’t we join GWRRA to have fun and enjoy the fellowship of other motorcycle enthusiasts that like riding, just like we do? I promise you this, if you give it a shot and take a chance and go on one of these rides, you will enjoy yourself. I warn you that if you do attend one of these rides, you may be hooked for good and want to attend even more of them!
We took a chance when we expanded and went on a ride to Freedom Rock with Don and Tina Rice from Chapter D leading, knowing we knew no one on that ride. What a great experience it turned out to be! Today we are friends with so many of those that went on that ride and especially a couple from Madison that we still go on monthly rides with. Friendships are born on these rides and to us that is what GWRRA is all about and one of the reasons we joined this great organization. But please don’t take my word for it, join in on the experience and find out for yourself.
There are more rides and social events that may interest you that are listed on the calendar of Chapter K’s website. Chapter K has also gone social – we created a Facebook page! You can find it at GWRRA Wisconsin Chapter K. Please join the group – this will be a great way to stay in touch with each other as well as for posting last minute ride updates. Or maybe it’s a beautiful Sunday afternoon and you can put out a post for a great ride you are going on and invite others to come along.
If you have any questions or a ride that may interest you, please give me a call or send me an email.
